Arma 2 is the follow up to Bohemia Game's popular, realistic military simulation.
In Arma 2 you are given a military play set and set free in a simulated world to set up and engage in your own military scenarios. There is a campaign mode where you play through a lengthy story as a number of military personnel using a wide variety of military hardware but the real fun is in creating military scenarios or playing through other peoples creations.
There is an expansive world creator and scenario creator where you can create and craft your own missions using versatile and powerful tools. As well as this you can also download and play through countless creations made by other players and uploaded to the Internet.
Due to its flexible nature, Arma 2 has become a favourite of modders around the world and has spawned some of the most popular user-made content ever created. The chief among these is probably Dean Hall's DayZ mod which puts you in the place of a survivor of a zombie apocalypse and lets you and your friends see how long you can survive in an unforgiving world surrounded by hordes of the undead. DayZ was such a popular phenomenon that only a year after its initial release as a mod, Dean Hall and his team received the option to create a standalone game that has been available on Steam, in early access, for over a year.
It's not just the fantastical ideas of zombie apocalypse's that are available to you though. Real world military buffs will be able to find re-imaginings of some of the most important military campaigns and missions for them to play through.
The game allows dozens of people to play on servers at any one time. Whether it's you and your chosen squad, going to war against AI or you and your squad versus other humans. The action is real, visceral and very, very big. You can utilise all manner of military and civilian means of transportation to travel around maps that can stretch up to many square kilometres.
Some people do find the play style a little slow as it's geared much more to the simulation market than the arcadey crowd. This isn't another game of Call of Duty where you respawn endlessly on claustrophobic maps. This is a game that caters to those looking for real military experiences.
